A "Diamond" future for Queensway?

The story of QUEENSWAY stretches back many years, but in the last few years it has been the focus of much concern to Hazlemere residents as a site proposed for:
bulletA Northern District Park-and-Ride scheme,
bulletA potential site for the displaced, Flood-lit Running Track and, even more recently, as
bulletThe most likely site to be chosen for (originally) as many as another 200 allotments, to supplement the 30 or so already on Queensway.

This map shows the location of Queensway, occupying a prominent position at the heart of Hazlemere just 500 yards from Hazlemere Crossroads and several years ago it was purchased by Wycombe District Council as the potential site for the council's Northern Park-and-Ride scheme, designed to reduce the traffic congestion in the centre of Wycombe caused by commuters and shoppers. The Park-and-Ride scheme eventually fell away and the next proposed use for the site was as a potential site for the displaced running track. This scheme eventually fell away too, as the site proposed for the location of the running track eventually changed to the Sir William Ramsay School Field. This plan fell when  councillors at the planning committee meeting voted by 7 votes to 6 against the track coming to Hazlemere. More recently, WDC's search for a suitable site for more allotments brought Queensway into focus once more, as the potential site for up to 200 allotments. Agreement was subsequently reached that a more modest plan for 40 half-sized (5 pole) allotments was more likely to gain resident's support.

Hazlemere residents have put forward various alternative ideas for how the land at Queensway could be used for a community project, with the most popular idea being for a country park of some kind with the land being placed in trust, belonging to the community and being protected from future development.  However as a Wycombe District Council asset, the 18 or so acres of open space land at Queensway will continue to be of concern to the residents of Hazlemere until it's long term future is ascertained.

On 9th July 2011, a Bucks Free Press story featured the latest developments in the ongoing Queensway saga.

The BFP story gave details of the discussions at the recent monthly meeting of Hazlemere Parish Council, concerning the contentious possibility of more allotments coming to Queensway. However according to the story, councillors said the future was looking brighter! The BFP story continued: Wycombe District Council own land at Queensway and were planning to put allotments at the site. Concerns were raised about the number of the plots and whether they would be reserved for available Hazlemere residents or available to those outside the village .

At the Hazlemere Parish Council on Tuesday 5th June, Cllr David Cox said he understands that there has been a suggestion put forward to WDC cabinet to have 20 per cent of the land as allotments and the other 80 per cent as a park area.

He added: “This is a suggested use of the area which is certainly going through the mill at Wycombe District Council. As far as I can gather the cabinet were very happy with the idea.”

Chairman, Judy Weaver, said if this comes to fruition it will be very favourable.

Spokesman for Wycombe District Council, Sue Robinson, said: “We're aware of local discussions about Queensway and some ideas have been raised informally. As yet, we have no definite plans and we're waiting to hear more.”

Bringing the story of Queensway right up to date: A press release has just been received, from a Hazlemere resident who is championing the use of Queensway as a Tranquil Park. This press release was sent to the editor of The Bucks Free Press and contains details of a proposed scheme to create a new "Tranquil Park", for the enjoyment of anyone who lives in Hazlemere or visits Queensway!

Full Press release click  here (an abridged version appears below):

"Some months ago Prince William personally wrote to all Local Authorities in the UK asking them to do something memorable and lasting in their area to celebrate his Grandmother’s 60th anniversary as our Queen. His wish was that 2,012 new parks/leisure public facilities would be created as a lasting memory and tribute to her reign.“Queensway – Tranquil Park”

Queensway Open Space already has links to Royalty – to Queen Victoria, no less - hence, the name Queensway. The existing Open Space has been used bydogwalkers, walkers, children and for picnics for decades. It also provides a green open space in the immediate built up area (Crossroads at Hazlemere), and is much valued.

The beauty and theme of the project is, simplicity, low cost, low maintenance. Hopefully, it will be financed by Sect. 106 monies (developers contributions from recent flat developments), Councillor Ward budgets, and the Big Society budget. So it will not be an additional burden on the council taxpayers.

However, to turn the dream into reality, I need your help by asking people to sign the Petition that is located in several places around Hazlemere. For more details please feel free to contact me. I intend to present the petition to a WDC Full Council meeting later in the year.

I am hoping that the BFP will pick-up on the scheme to publicise it and request support from you, and the readers of BFP.

2012 is going to be an exciting year with the Queen’s jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games.

Finally, I will be personally writing to the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge asking them to open the Park sometime in 2012".

Mrs Wanda Brown – Long standing resident of Hazlemere
